Pregnant couples are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a hospital to give birth at in Dubai, and there are so many factors to consider - from the birthing and newborn-care facilities on offer, to the ethos of the doctors, involvement of the midwives and the postnatal care that's available.

Saudi-based medical group Dr Sulaiman Al Habib's hospital in Dubai Healthcare City already has a well-established reputation amongst the UAE medical community for cutting-edge equipment; patients are often referred here for in-depth antenatal scans with its state-of-the-art technology, and the modern  NICU facilities on offer are renowned.

However, for most expecting couples, there's a lot more to choosing a birth hospital than medical equipment alone, which is why the ethos and approach of the midwives and doctors in the ob-gyn department become so important.

On our visit of the maternity ward we were impressed by the enthusiasm and warmth of the midwives, by the passion of the doctors, and by the sense that each member of staff here seems to feel empowered to do their job in the most effective and efficient way possible, which definitely stands out from other hospital maternity wards in Dubai.

There are also lots of unique added extras to make mums-to-be and new mothers feel special - from the nail and hair services that are available to order, to the free pampering box that every new mum receives, to the complimentary postnatal home visit with a midwife that's included with every birth.

What the patients say
Perhaps the greatest endorsement of any maternity ward is word of mouth from those who have used the facilities themselves, and the patients we met practically bubbled over with enthusiasm about their births here - not because they were precisely what they planned (when does a birth ever truly go to plan?), but because of the positive attitude and supportiveness of the hospital staff, who made even a premature emergency C-section delivery patient feel that she had the best birth experience she could possibly have had considering the circumstances.

While there's no replacement for an in-person tour yourself, our video walk-through of the maternity ward at Dr Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City - where we look at the facilities, meet staff members and chat to patients - may help you decide whether it seems the right place for you.
