“Your skin can change dramatically during pregnancy due to the rise in hormones, which are responsible for everything from pigmentation to hypersensitivity and dryness,” says Michelle Hoskin, skincare specialist at Dr Hauschka. “Some women will be sporting a healthy glow while others will suffer from a range of niggles – it’s like a beauty lottery!” Here’s how to stay looking your best, whatever those pesky hormones throw at you.
Banish dryness. Your skin is your largest organ, so it should be treated with respect. This means avoiding harsh exfoliators and chemicals such as parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Anything you put on your skin is absorbed into the bloodstream within 20 seconds, so it’s always best to err on the side of caution when pregnant and stick to organic, natural brands with simple, effective ingredients. My top tip for banishing dryness is to incorporate a weekly moisturising mask into your skincare routine - it can make a big difference!
Try: Dr Hauschka Hydrating Mask, Dh176.50 (30ml), contains a blend of botanicals to soothe, protect and revitalise while sealing in moisture.
Combat dark spots and pigmentation. Around half of all women will experience skin pigmentation while pregnant. Known as ‘the mask of pregnancy’, this happens due to the rapid rise of hormones that trigger an increase of melanin, which is responsible for giving colour to your skin, hair and eyes. It can be quite stubborn, but you can help to prevent and treat it with soothing ingredients such as nourishing rose, which combats dryness and has a calming effect on the skin.
Try: Dr Hauschka Rose Day Cream, Dh108.75 (30ml), which contains shea butter, rose petal wax and avocado oil protect and help retain moisture.
Soothe puffy skin. Puffy ankles and feet are normal during pregnancy and more common in the third trimester. It’s simply due to fluid retention, which can be exacerbated in hot weather. To keep puffiness at bay, make sure you stay well hydrated and, if you can, take some time out and elevate your feet. Applying a cooling spritz or lotion will have an instant soothing effect.
Try: Dr Hauschka Revitalising Leg and Arm Tonic, Dh97.50 (100ml), contains energising rosemary essential oil to soothe and minimise water retention and perk-up tired legs arms and legs. Plus, Borage helps reduce the appearance of varicose veins and cellulite.
Ease away stretchmarks. As your bump grows, stretchmarks can appear on your tummy as well as on your upper thighs and breasts. Itchiness around skin that’s becoming thick and pink is a tell-tale sign that stretchmarks are on the way. Guard against them by moisturising daily with a hydrating body oil. After your shower, apply the oil while your skin is still damp, as this helps to supercharge absorbency.
Try: Dr Hauschka Blackthorn Toning Body Oil, Dh84.50 (75ml) is a hit among pregnant women, containing blackthorn blossom and birch leaf extracts to enhance skin elasticity, as well as St John’s wort and jojoba oil to support skin renewal.
Calm sensitivity. You may find your skin is hypersensitive during pregnancy so you may benefit from switching to organic make-up. Look for formulations with moisturising oils that are free from synthetic fragrances and preservatives so are less likely to cause irritation or flare-ups.
Try: Dr Hauschka Foundation, Dh108 (30ml), which contains pomegranate essence, macadamia nut oil and coconut oil to moisturise and protect the skin.
