Sleeping bags

Grobag Ollie for Dh260 available at Just Kidding

Baby sleeping bags can prevent your baby’s head from being covered by wriggling under bedding. You can choose different togs for different seasons to help keep your baby at the right temperature.

Cellular blankets

The Lullaby Trust advises that blankets are fine as an alternative to sleeping bags, as long as they aren’t thick or doubled over, so there is no chance of overheating. Lightweight cellular blankets are a good option. Ensure they are firmly tucked in and come up no higher than the shoulders. Sleep your baby with his or her feet against the foot of the cot to avoid their face becoming covered.

Room thermometer

It is important to make sure that your baby’s room is not too hot or too cold. The chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is higher in babies who get too hot. While international advice is to keep the room temperature between 16 and 20°C, this can be a challenge in the UAE. Experts recommend setting your AC to around 22°C (ensuring baby is out of the way of the direct air blast), putting babies in only two thin layers of clothing to sleep at night, and using a low-tog blanket or gro bag (around 0.5-1.5 tog).

Using a dummy when putting your baby down to sleep might reduce the chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). If you choose to use a dummy, it is recommended that you consider offering it once breastfeeding has been established, typically when your baby is about one month old.

Air purifier

University of Birmingham research from 2018 found a link between SIDS and exposure to larger airborne pollutants. While more research is needed in this area, Dr. Rania Ayat Hawayek, specialist paediatrician at Infinity Clinic, says that improving the indoor air quality of your home can help with overall health.
