If there’s one thing that I regret not doing with my oldest boy it’s getting some proper photos of his newborn phase. We have hundreds of phone pics of him slumped in a bouncer in a variety of sleep suits, but the lighting isn’t great, his posing isn’t on point and the images remain a mass of pixels floating in the cloud
Second time around I wised up and booked in a newborn photo session – tired and raw as we all were a few days after the birth, it was so worth it, and three years later we are able to marvel at his teeny fingers and toes in the beautiful pics.
But there are some things you need to know before booking in a newborn photography session. We caught up with Mahvin Haghighat Joo, a newborn and baby photographer from Emotions Newborn Photography, to get the lowdown…
When to have the photos
The best time to take newborn photos is within the first two weeks, preferably when baby is between five and 10 days old. During this stage, babies are flexible and spend lots of time sleeping, so it’s easier to get them in beautiful poses. As they get older they are more likely to fuss and it will be harder to get the shots you want.
When to book
Mums should book their photography session while they are still pregnant, around three to four months in advance ideally to assure an appropriate slot for the photo session. Each photographer will have their own booking procedure, but usually you will need to let them know of your estimated due date so that they can ensure they will have availability. If having a natural birth, you let them know as soon as baby is here.
Are there any special conditions that need to be met for a newborn photoshoot?
We always ensure that our studio is set up to make a newborn as comfortable as possible – we keep the environment warm and ensure that there is plenty of time for feeding and changing so everyone is relaxed.
How long does a newborn photoshoot take?
Our packages are:
• Mini session: Approx 1-2 hours.
• Full session: Approx 2-3 hours.
• If parents wish to add family shoot, it usually takes extra 45 minutes.
What’s the best part of your job?
I am so blessed to be able to work with little babies and to capture beautiful moments in their first few weeks of life and receiving lovely messages and calls from parents who are happy with their photoshoot... That’s the reason for my passion and why I love what I do.

This well-known Dubai studio has launched a new photography concept, called New Life photography. Taken within the first 48 hours after birth, it’s a compromise between birth photography (which tends to be very raw) and newborn photography (which is more posed). Book in your session and their female photographer will be on standby around your due date, ready to come to the hospital to snap natural images capturing moments like the first meeting with siblings, feeding, changing and cuddles while you’re all still in the afterglow of the new arrival. www.stu.ae

"One thing I’ve learnt in the 10-plus years of doing newborn photography is that flexibility is key! I work around the parents’ needs — most of my sessions take place in the family home or at locations around Dubai. My mobile studio has all the lights, props and blankets we need to shoot anywhere. I was trained as a newborn photographer at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London so am very comfortable in a hospital setting too. I charge Dhs1,000 for my sessions, which includes all the images"
