School uniforms, stationery,  and extracurricular activities and school trips will all be subject to 5% tax as of January 2018.

However, public and private school education, as well as nursery and pre-school education will all benefit from 0% VAT.

Rents should not go up, as the lease or sale of residential buildings are exempt.

But expect your petrol costs to rise, since vehicle fuel will be subject to 5% tax.

And, although it was possible for  GCC countries to apply a zero rate of VAT to around 100 items of food,  the authorities have chosen to apply 5% VAT to all food and beverage, so everything from baby formula to bottled water will rise in price.

Check out our slideshow for a full breakdown of how VAT will affect goods and services that are relevant to the average expat family.
